Roofing in Uptown, FL

Uptown is the north end of the City of St. Augustine, from Grove Avenue up San Marco Avenue to the Vilano causeway, and from the bay west to a block or two short of US 1. It is two historic districts and the streets between them. Abbott Tract, north of the Castillo, was laid out by Lucy Abbott in the 1870s and had 126 houses by 1904. Nelmar Terrace grew along the trolley line that ran up San Marco from 1914 and filled in during the 1920s boom. The houses are frame and masonry from the 1880s to the 1930s, under metal, shingle, and some tile, with 1950s infill on the side streets.

Abbott Tract sits on the bayfront and flooded in Matthew in October 2016 and Irma in September 2017. The rest of Uptown sits a little higher but takes the same northeast wind off the bay in a nor'easter, and the tall old roofs leak at the flashing and the dormers first.

This site connects Uptown homeowners with an independent local roofing contractor by phone. It does not perform the work.

Uptown roofing, two districts and the streets between

A 1920s bungalow in Nelmar Terrace with a leak at the porch roof is a roof repair. A visible change on a contributing house in Abbott Tract goes through the review board as a historic district roofing job. A 1950s house on the west side of San Marco on its third shingle roof is a roof replacement permitted through the city.

Where to call in Uptown

The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, on its campus at the north end of San Marco Avenue since 1885, is the landmark that ends the neighborhood and the reason the trolley ran there. Permits run through the city's Planning and Building Department.
