Hastings is the potato town at the south end of St. Johns County, founded in 1890 to grow produce for Flagler's St. Augustine hotels and known for a century as Florida's potato capital. Its residents voted in November 2017 to dissolve the town, and on March 1, 2018, it became unincorporated county. The housing is early 1900s frame homes under metal on the streets off Main Street, 1950s and 1960s block homes, manufactured homes on the county roads, and farmhouses with porches and metal barns across the fields around it.
Water comes up from the creeks. Milton on October 10, 2024, dropped nine to fifteen inches of rain, sent Deep Creek past the record Irma set in September 2017, and put more than five feet of water on parts of Hastings and Flagler Estates south of State Road 206.
